August

Back to where we were at the beginning of the holidays. On this special year dedicated to St Paul it is recommended we do something to honour him, familiarise ourselves with his works and maybe even go on pilgrimage to Rome or any of the places associated with him. There will be a plenary indulgence for pilgrims-a complete remission of the temporary punishment due to sin. Seeing as we can't all go to Rome or do any of Paul's missionary journeys, we may be told yet where else to go. There would be Confession and Holy Communion and prayers for the Pope's intentions. All in good time-we have a year.
The next International Eucharistic Congress will be in Dublin in 2012. It will be special too as it will be the 50th. There will be great benefits from the preparation leading up to this-Catechesis and youth evangelisation prayers etc. How could we best participate in this?
We had the World Youth Festival with Pope Benedict in Sydney. Thanks to the young people who decorated our Church. Our media didn't do much for us. EWTN was great. The message is for everyone even old young people like us. Don't be afraid, believe in the Light. We are not alone. Our first job is to believe. For ages Australia had no priests or churches at all. Priests were among the convicts from here. (after 1798 Rebellion). A certain Fr Lynch left a sacred host in a pyx in a house when he was brought back
here and the people used to meet for Rosary and adoration in that house until the English sent them a priest and the rest is history. Speaking of which, don't forget we have adoration on Wednesdays from Mass till 11.30

Next World Youth Day will be in Madrid in 2011. Young people start saving - better than any Electric Picnic. It's not that far distance wise- start budgeting. Bring us back the new life and enthusiasm. Remember it can't go on without you!

It's cemetery month. The annual Mass in St Declan's will be on Thursday 21st at 7.30 in the Graveyard-weather permitting of course. Tell your friends and neighbours because many people like to come even if they don't live here. It is a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead and it's always a great occasion for us.

Welcome back and best wishes to Fr Kiely, we missed you.

Enjoy the Olympics. Of course we hope our athletes do well. Geoff Curran is our county man-in horse dressage. We hope he wins the gold. Wouldn't a few Golds do us all good-we might forget the bad weather!

There are no Pastoral Council Meetings until after the holidays. There are no Cluster meetings either. Keep your holy pictures, rosaries and statues. They will be very useful as reminders if vocations get scarcer. Images are very important. Think of all the trouble that goes into making TV programmes and how images are pushed before our eyes from morning till night. Lots of them no good and some even bad! Think of how they managed in Australia with no priest for years! Get to know your Faith. Nobody would ever leave the Catholic Church if they only knew what we have.
